Interfaces disappear
As agents mediate more of what we do, the screen full of buttons starts to look like a transitional artifact.
The graphical interface was a brilliant compromise. Because software could not understand intent, it offered us a map of everything it could do, buttons, menus, forms, and asked us to translate what we wanted into the moves it understood. We have spent forty years getting fluent in that translation, to the point where we forgot it was a compromise at all.
When software can understand intent directly, much of that map becomes unnecessary. You do not navigate to the screen that books a flight; you say where you want to be, and an agent handles the navigation on your behalf. The interface does not get prettier. It recedes. The work moves behind a conversation, or behind nothing visible at all.
This does not mean screens vanish tomorrow, or ever entirely. Some tasks want a canvas, a dashboard, a direct hand on the controls. But the centre of gravity is shifting from interfaces we operate to outcomes we request, and the software that wins will be judged less on how it looks and more on whether it understood what we actually meant.
For builders, this is a quietly radical change. Decades of competitive advantage were built on owning the interface, the place the user lived. When the agent becomes the place the user lives, the advantage moves to whoever the agent trusts to fulfil the request. We are watching closely for who that turns out to be.
